Senior Access For Emergency Responders
Senior Emergency Access & Home Safety Program
Helping First Responders Get In When Every Second Matters.
SAFER helps first responders reach and better assist older adults during emergencies. Through free emergency-access lockboxes, organized medical information, visible safety alerts, and personalized preparedness, SAFER helps seniors remain safer at home while supporting community emergency preparedness efforts.
A Senior Resource Partners Initiative
Why Senior Emergency Access Matters
When an older adult calls 911, getting help through the front door isn't always simple. Locked doors, missing medical information, and unknown safety concerns can create additional challenges for emergency responders.
SAFER is designed to help communities address these challenges before an emergency occurs.
By combining residential emergency-access lockboxes, organized medical information, and visible safety alerts, SAFER supports senior home safety, emergency preparedness, and safer aging in place.
What’s Included In The SAFER Program?
-
SAFER provides eligible seniors with a free emergency-access lockbox designed to securely hold a spare house key.
In partnership with participating 911 dispatch centers and fire departments, authorized first responders can obtain access information during an emergency, helping reduce delays, avoid unnecessary property damage, and reach older adults who may be unable to unlock their doors.
The program supports seniors aging in place while helping communities improve emergency response preparedness.
-
SAFER provides participants with an Emergency Medical Form (EMF) to help first responders quickly access important medical information during an emergency.
The form organizes essential details such as medical conditions, medications, allergies, emergency contacts, and other information that may assist responding personnel.
By making this information readily accessible in the home, SAFER supports better communication and more informed emergency response.
-
During an emergency, first responders need important information quickly.
SAFER's visual medical-alert system uses easy-to-read refrigerator magnets to highlight critical medical conditions, communication challenges, and safety considerations, such as diabetes, stroke history, dementia, or nonverbal communication.
Placed near the Emergency Medical Form (EMF), these alerts provide a quick visual reference to help emergency responders recognize important needs without searching through paperwork.
Less Searching. Less Guessing. More Knowing.
-
Every SAFER participant receives a resource folder designed to support senior home safety, emergency preparedness, and independent living.
The folder includes important program documents, medication disposal information, educational materials, and helpful resources from community partners.
Through local business sponsorships and community partnerships, SAFER connects older adults and caregivers with valuable information, services, and resources that promote safer aging in place.
-
Smoke alarms are an essential part of home fire safety, especially for older adults aging in place.
Through community partnerships, SAFER aims to provide eligible seniors with smoke alarms and access to fire prevention education and resources.
By working alongside local fire departments and community organizations, SAFER supports residential fire safety, early fire detection, and emergency preparedness to help older adults remain safer in their homes.
Bring SAFER to Your Community
Communities across the country face growing challenges in protecting older adults who choose to age in place.
SAFER offers a community-based approach to senior emergency preparedness by bringing together residential lockbox programs, medical information resources, home fire safety, and first responder awareness.
We welcome conversations with fire departments, municipalities, emergency management agencies, 911 dispatch centers, and senior service organizations interested in developing or strengthening senior safety initiatives.
Together, we can help first responders get in when every second matters.
Help Make Senior Safety Free
Every senior deserves to feel safer at home, regardless of their financial circumstances.
SAFER is built on a community-supported model that provides emergency preparedness resources to eligible older adults at no cost.
Through business sponsorships, corporate partnerships, and community contributions, supporters help fund residential emergency-access lockboxes, medical-alert resources, senior safety education, and other essential program supplies.
Whether sponsoring one household or helping bring SAFER to an entire community, your partnership can make a meaningful difference.
Because protecting our seniors is a community responsibility.
